Fixie - Independent Bike Mechanics Across New Zealand

Our story

The story of Fixie began with my passion for cycling and a desire to support the skilled mechanics who keep bikes rolling.

A growing problem

Having worked in bike shops, I witnessed many mechanics leave the industry driven by better wages in other industries. This wasn't just a loss for the shops but for the entire cycling community, with long wait times for servicing, especially during peak season. The result is a shortage of mechanics within the industry, yet a surplus of passionate, skilled mechanics working elsewhere.

A surplus of mechanics

This was no fault of the shops either; wages are challenging due to high overheads and low demand in the off-season. However, post-covid, our sport is thriving yet the industry is struggling, with many shops closing down, leaving mechanics not just out of work but out of a career. These are mechanics who love fixing bikes! They have a passion for the sport but have had to move to other industries to support their personal goals.

A vision for change

I realized that the solution to address these issues was to connect skilled mechanics to riders directly through an online marketplace. This would enable mechanics to do more of what they love, without the costly overheads and would also benefit riders by reducing wait times and offering more affordable services, more local to them.

A sustainable solution

The model we use allows Fixie to grow and shrink with the flow of the seasons. With my background as a bike-passionate web developer, I saw the potential to make this happen and bring a positive change to the industry. So, from here in Auckland, for New Zealand, Fixie was born!
