FAQs
Frequantly asked questions for Mechanics
How do I sign up?
You can sign up here. You will be asked to create a profile, configure your pricing, and set up your payout account. You will also be asked for details regarding your skills and experience, which will be reviewed prior to your account being approved.
What skills do I need to join Fixie?
We require that you have relevant experience and skills in bike repair and maintenance. Certifications and formal training are a plus but not mandatory. We may request proof of experience during the registration process.
Can I set my own rates?
Yes, you have full control over setting your own rates on the Fixie platform. You establish an hourly rate, which can be used to pre-fill the pricing chart for fixed-price jobs or customized to suit each job's requirements.
Can I work elsewhere while contracting through Fixie?
Yes, you can work elsewhere while contracting through Fixie, provided that you comply with any other agreements or non-compete clauses in effect. Fixie does not impose a non-compete agreement, however, any work originating through Fixie must be completed through Fixie.
What is the difference between a quote and an estimate?
A quote is a fixed price that you provide for a specific job. Once you give a rider a quote, the price cannot change. An estimate is an approximate price for a given job. The final cost may change based on the actual work required. It's important to clearly communicate to the rider whether you are providing a quote or an estimate (and what this means) to avoid any misunderstandings about the final price.
How does Fixie support mechanics?
Fixie provides a platform for you to connect with riders in need of bike repairs and maintenance. We handle the marketing, booking, and payment processing, allowing you to focus on providing quality service. Our goal is to help you earn more and reach more clients while offering a convenient and easy-to-use platform.
How do I receive bookings?
Bookings are sent to you through the Fixie platform. You'll receive notifications via email, then use the app to review details and confirm appointments.
How many jobs can I take?
During signup, you will enter your availability, ranging from "a couple a week" to "as much as possible." This can be changed at any time and is used by Fixie when recommending mechanics for bookings. You have full control when choosing to accept a job.
How do I get paid?
After completing a job, you are responsible for ensuring the rider pays through the Fixie platform. The payment (minus platform fees) is then available for payout 4 buisness days after the service. You have control over your payouts, with one free payout per week. This process changes if the rider lodges a dispute within the 4 days. See "How are payouts handled if there's a dispute?".
How are payouts handled if there's a dispute?
If the rider raises a dispute, any payment made is held by Fixie and not available for payout until the dispute is resolved. Once the dispute is resolved, the payment (minus platform fees) will be made available for payout. If a resolution involves a refund to the rider, the mechanic will receive the adjusted amount after the dispute is settled. Fixie ensures that the payment process is fair and transparent for both mechanics and riders.
What fees does Fixie charge?
Fixie charges mechanics a 15% fee on each booking. For parts sold, the commission is reduced to 5% (at Fixies discretion) to allow full payment to be processed in one place. This covers card processing fees, use of the platform, and marketing (to get you jobs!). Zero fees are paid by the rider. If a refund is issued Fixie only charges fees on the amount paid to the mechanic.
What is the relationship between mechanics and Fixie?
Mechanics on the Fixie platform are independent contractors, not employees. Each job booked through Fixie is an individual contract between the mechanic and the rider. This allows you the flexibility to set your own rates, manage your own schedule, and choose which jobs to accept.
What are my tax obligations as a mechanic on Fixie?
As an independent contractor, you are responsible for handling your own tax obligations.
Do I need to have insurance?
As an independent contractor, you should have your own insurance to cover any potential liabilities while performing jobs booked through Fixie. This helps protect you and your business in case of accidents or damages.
What types of jobs can I accept through Fixie?
You can accept a wide range of jobs, from basic tune-ups and maintenance to complex repairs. You can specify your areas of expertise and the types of services you offer in your profile.
